Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: the First Step to Success

Ahh… those all-important wedding photos. I hate to generalize but as a photographer, quite frankly, it’s always the same. Whenever I meet with potential new clients, the first thing they normally tell me is how bad they are at being photographed. My usual response? Join the club (I don’t tell them this, of course). The truth is, we’re all a bit insecure if front of a camera - yes, even professional models! It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious and slightly awkward when having your picture taken.

When it comes to your wedding photos though, you don’t have much of a choice. What you can control however is the photographer you choose to capture those special moments. Where do you begin? Well, it all starts with your first instincts.

The first steps to feeling comfortable in your wedding photos.

Trust Your Inner Voice

I can’t stress this enough - go with a photographer who makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and confident. Apart from respecting their professional work, you need to connect with them on a personal level too. Essentially, you are employing a cheerleader, a counselor, a time-coordinator and all-round personal assistant.

This person will spend your entire day with you - from your getting-ready prep right to the very last song at the reception. It is so important that you feel calm and at-ease as this sets the tone for the entire wedding. For this reason, I recommend doing a test shoot well ahead of time to gauge the level of comfort between you. If something feels off - they make you feel nervous, anxious or on-edge, for example - don’t ignore the signs. These are not emotions you want to associate with your wedding.

Do Your Research

The best thing you can use social media for: research. Most photographers display their wedding portfolios on Facebook and Instagram these days. Spend ample time combing through past weddings they’ve done. What is their aesthetic? What are the faces of the bridal couple telling you? Also look for testimonials from past clients. The reviews should be positive, happy and glowing. If they’re not, proceed with caution!

Experience Counts for a Lot

On the topic of research, the true measure of their work will lie in their experience. Photographing a wedding can be highly stressful - trust me. I hate to say it, but those with more experience in the industry generally handle hectic environments better. If you’re unsure about a photographer’s experience, be honest. Let them know your concerns. Ask them those tricky “what if” questions ahead of time… What if it rains? What if a memory card fails? What if you run out of champagne? The way that they deal with your anxiety or cornerns counts for a lot. You may find that they understand your worries better than you think. This is also an excellent way to create a level of trust and honesty between you.

Relax, You Look AMAZING

Lastly, no amount of encouragement from your photographer will matter if you don’t already believe it yourself. You need to trust in the team you’ve chosen to help you create the most memorable day of your life. Everyone around you truly wants you to have the perfect wedding day. It can be easy to get caught up in your head, especially with all the activity surrounding you. Remember to breathe, relax your shoulders and smile.

Yes, you look incredible; of course your guests are having a good time and the photos will come out great. Now stop worrying and go enjoy your wedding. You deserve it!

Shout out to all the Dads out there!

Fathers Day- that special time of the year to look forward to spring – and celebrate these special men in our lives.

I am blessed to meet several amazing fathers from all walks of life as a daughter, mother and a lifestyle photographer.  Let me tell you: no father is alike.

All Fathers are different but on the most part- they all have one thing in common: love. As cheesy as it sounds, a father’s love knows no bounds. No matter how old their children are, no matter where they are, they will always continue to love and support them the best way they could. I know this personally- I know that I call my dad in the middle of the night- for any reason he would be there in a heart beat, he has gone above and beyond my whole life- and  I know my husband would do the same for our son.

So don’t hesitate to give them a handwritten card or a little token from the heart. Go out and fish or have a lovely outing on the beach. You can take also them out to a special family dinner, the movies or whatever his jam is.

Either way, take this opportunity to say thank you and show your love to your father.

Have a great day everyone!
